Paint Kitchen Cabinets To Look Like Wood
I completed a project in which I painted some off white kitchen cabinets to look like a dark wood grain. This first picture shows the competed job. I just painted the island in the center of the kichen. This island has 6 doors and 6 drawers on the front side and 2 more tall slim doors on the backside.
The rest of the kitchen cabinets are an off white with pinstripes. Here is a picture of a door on the island before I started to create the wood grain look.

Painting white kitchen cabinets to look like wood is one of the biggest type projects I take on. It takes me a long time create this look but just like with this island the effort pays off.

Looks beautiful, can't even imagine them white! What do you use for a primer and a top coat? Love seeing what your painting.
ReplyDeleteI think the best primer for kitchen cabinets is a product called 'CoverStain' it is made by Zinsser and you can get it in all the big box stores. It is an oil based product but dries as fast as a latex. You can tint it also. It sands down very easily when dried. The base I use is Sherwin Williams Emerald paint line. I use that for the wood grain colors also. For a top coat I use a product called Varathane polyurethane.

I have to order it from Home Depot as I can't find anyone around here that carries it. but it is really good. Amazon carries it also and if you go there you can see all the rave reviews.

You can also use 'The Gripper' as a primer from Home Depot. For this set of cabinets I used the gray Gripper and then had it tinted with 1 oz of black and 2 oz of raw umber. That gives it a really nice dark warm gray. Then for the base coat of paint I used Sherwin Williams 'Pennywise'. For the first coat of wood grain I used SW 'Fiery Brown' and for the second coat I used SW 'Black Bean'.
DeleteWhen painting kitchen cabinets you really want to clean and degrease them well first. I use a product called Krud Kutter but there are other good degreases out there. Lightly sand with a 220 or 320 grit sandpaper after you clean them not before. The sanding is very light as all you are trying to do is create a tooth on the existing finish to give the primer a better surface to grab onto. It's more like you are just wiping them down with the sandpaper rather than really sanding them hard. Hope this helps.

ReplyDeleteI am working on a tutorial for this but it will not be ready for another 6 months. The colors are Sherwin Williams. Base coat is pennywise, first coat of brown is fiery brown, second coat is black bean.
